How can I tell whether the problem is compatibility-related or an optical-link problem?

Check whether the host correctly identifies the transceiver first. If the module is rejected, incorrectly identified, or generates vendor-related warnings, investigate compatibility. If it is correctly recognized but the link remains down, investigate fiber, optical power, wavelength, FEC, polarity, and the remote endpoint.

Can I use two differently branded compatible transceivers at opposite ends of the link?

Yes, provided each transceiver is compatible with its local host and both modules use matching optical standards, wavelengths, data rates, fiber types, and other required link parameters.

Why does a compatible transceiver work in one switch but not another?

Different switch models, hardware revisions, operating systems, and firmware versions may use different transceiver validation rules. A module compatible with one platform may require different coding for another.

Do compatible transceivers support hot swapping?
