Can third-party transceivers damage a switch?

A properly designed transceiver that meets the required electrical, mechanical, thermal, and interface specifications should operate within the host platform's intended transceiver interface requirements.

Why does the link work at one end but show an error at the other end?

Each transceiver must be compatible with its own host device. In a mixed-vendor link, one end may be correctly coded while the transceiver at the opposite end is not fully compatible with its switch or router.

Can different transceiver brands be used at opposite ends of a fiber link?

Yes. The transceivers do not normally need to be from the same manufacturer. Their Ethernet standard, wavelength, fiber type, lane configuration, reach, and other link requirements must be compatible.

Why does replacing an OEM transceiver with a compatible transceiver result in no link?

First verify that the compatible replacement matches the OEM module's form factor, data rate, wavelength, reach, fiber type, connector, and interface standard. Then confirm that it has the correct compatibility coding for the host platform.

Does using compatible optics affect transmission distance?

Compatibility coding itself does not determine transmission distance. Reach is primarily determined by the optical specification, fiber type, wavelength, link loss, connector quality, and network design.
